A few words of feedback given to me direct or via companies I have worked for -
John, thanks for your training and company on our two day winter skills course on the slopes of Ben Lawers and Ben Dorain. Myself and my ten year old son enjoyed every minute of it. Your skill, experience and teaching methods (thanks for the patience with the putting on of kit!) are commendable as is your safety first decision making. The tailoring of the advice for myself and my son, which was different due to our respective size and age was much appreciated. We enjoyed the philosophical discussions around respecting the environment, modern technology, balancing safety with adventure, and the definition of a munro round and we also had fun and some laughs. You showed humility in your respect for the mountains and encouraging us to overcome our own shortfalls through perseverance, practice and learning from mistakes.
We have increased confidence now to take on Winter Munros and appreciate the range of potential difficulties and weather conditions,. We also appreciate the need for careful planning, preparation, execution and the need for proper kit. My aging body is still a bit sore from the ice axe arrest but achieving a pass after many efforts has increased the confidence in my own abilities. Malcolm and Lewis, Winter Skills and Summit 2 Day Course

You can look for all the qualifications you like but what you really want in a mountain guide is someone with those qualifications AND someone who will add interest to your trip, push your limits, make you have fun and most of all keep you safe. Johnny is all that and more. I'd consider myself an average walker having climbed all the wainwrights, dozens of munros and some of the highest mountains over 3000m across Europe... But I would accredit Johnny as being the one person over the years who has pushed me to excel and do more than I could ever imagine, having encouraged and helped me complete a challenging gully, a wild Munro or two, my first ice climb , numerous ridges and generally given me an astounding amount of knowledge of the mountain environment. All of which pushed myself beyond what I thought I could achieve. Having had the pleasure of Johnny's company in the mountains for over 8 years I couldn't recommend him enough. Rob, various trips over the years

Just a note of thanks for the last couple of days - Cairngorm 4000. The decision to swop days was an excellent one, this allowed us to get the most from both days. Johnny was an exceptional guide, I'm sure you already know this but worth reaffirming. It wasn't 'just' the guiding, for me it was the informative discussions, how he advised me on future objectives and the preparations necessary - His knowledge of the environment and the history of the Cairngorms was really impressive but never came across as arrogant - just someone who loved the environment and wanted to share his knowledge. He was incredibly patient with group members, especially those members of the group that at different times were struggling. A great couple of days and a big thanks to you for making it happen and Johnny for being a great guide. - Phil, Cairngorm 4000ers

John acted as our leader for an expedition to climb Elbrus in Russia (June 2019), which the whole group managed successfully. John was an excellent leader, always friendly and approachable but also very experienced and competent. At least one of our group would not have made the summit without his help on summit day. Thanks again John! - Richard, Elbrus summit week

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the weekend and feel I have taken so much from just a few days. A lot of what I have taken away is the small things that will make such a difference on future expeditions and even on more local treks. I really appreciated your encouraging but direct approach. I wish you every success with the business - Peter - Expedition Skills

Back in Berlin. I wish to tell you how much I enjoyed attending your “Winter Skills” course last week-end. With your contagious enthusiasm you certainly managed to convey an amazing number of practical tips and knowledge gathered though years of experience in a most authentic way. By changing to a route up a hill that was not on the original schedule, you showed how to have a fun day in challenging weather. For me it was a most valuable and fun time. Well worth the trip from Berlin - Rolf, Winter Walking Skills

Just wanted to say many thanks for the fantastic day out on Bidean Nam Ban yesterday. A proper winter day on the hills - challenging yet really satisfying and some great views as well, what more could you ask for! It was great to be out with someone so knowledgeable (and safe) - I really learnt a lot and will be back for more! - Chris, Winter Bidean nam Bian

Just wanted to drop you a line to say GREAT COURSE! We had two fantastic days (the range of weather was extraordinary - the first day we had 50 mile views from the top; on the second day the conditions were arctic) in the hands of the very accomplished, very knowledgeable and thoroughly likeable and pleasant trainer, Johnny Walker. Everything was extremely well explained with lots of useful snippets on offer throughout the two days: he packed so much in. He is simply a top notch trainer - Roman, Cairngorm Winter Walking Skills

Thank you so much again for what was for me a fantastic life experience. I had a great time which was completely down to you! You were a great guide, very knowledgeable and friendly and I felt comfortable with you straight away which gave me the confidence to push myself and try things I’ve never done before and didn’t think I had an interest in. The two summits we did will stay with me forever and the basic skills you were able to teach me will definitely be put into use in the future. Despite the weather you still provided a great experience and I will be letting everyone know how much I enjoyed it and the value I took away from the whole 5 days which was all down to you. - Chris, Winter Walking Skills Lochaber

Spent the weekend with Johnny Walker completing the Rum Cuillin. By far the most fun I have ever had. Knees are pretty sore but John guided and motivated me the whole way. Unbelievable value for money - Alan and John, Rum Cuillin bike-pack

Just a quick note to say many thanks for leading the group last week. I have already spoken to Chris and told him that I thought your delivery of the WMF course was excellent. What an Epic day it was. Everything fell into place. Starting with Johnny's hunch that hiring snow shoes in the morning might be a wise idea, to some amazing navigation skills in whiteout, to the perfect timing of reaching the final summit ascent as the clouds parted to reveal amazing alpine views across the whole plateau. And a wee tour of the crags, corries and climbs around on the way back, via a second munro for me. Cheers Johnny for another day ill never forget... - Colm, Ben Macdui and Cairngorm

Please could you thank Johnny for an outstanding day in the mountains on 27th and being a super guide. I found his tips throughout the day helpful, he really helped me out when things got challenging for me and I felt I was in safe hands. I went out with another guide the following day with a company in the Lake District and they were such a disappointment by comparison - Hazel, Winter ascent of the Buachaille Etive Mor

Thanks Johnny for such a fantastic day! It was a gorgeous start at the Deil's pulpit, and the hike up Ben Lomond was exhilarating! It is such a beautiful area. What is more, I learned so much...helpful hiking tips that came in really handy, but also about the mountains, the flora, rocks, language and history! Chatting away made the day that much more fun :) This was the perfect way to end my visit to Scotland, and I'm so glad I found your website and contacted you! :) - Kate, Deil's Pulpit and Ben Lomond

I just wanted to thank you for a brilliant day on the Loch Lochy Munros. I had a brilliant day despite the rather inhospitable views at the outset- its a big confidence booster to feel that you've coped with all of that! Just wanted to say a big thank you from Max and I for your efforts over Monday and Tuesday. I appreciate the effort in trying to achieve plan A, and subsequent re-thinking of how to spend a day and a half! Got to see and experience some epic scenery going over the Chalemain Gap, got even more of that experience walking towards the Lairig Ghru! - Mike and Max, winter back-packing Cairngorms

Shannon and I want to thank you again for two fantastic days in the Scottish Highlands. At every turn, your advice and guidance made us feel comfortable and able to make the right decisions to maximise our enjoyment. The original plan was to attempt Ben More but the severe and worsening forecast gave us pause. After a few minutes of discussion, it was clear that Ben More would be really hard going. We were up for a challenge but not misery so we agreed to change our goal. Fortunately, you had a worthy backup in Ben Ledi. It turned out to be one of the greatest things Shannon and I have ever done together. Believe it or not, the second day was as valuable to us as the first. The hike was filled with great conversation about politics, family, motorcycles and Scottish history. Woven through our time together was a clear love of the environment, Scotland, family and your work. It was a joy to spend time with such a good guy - Tod and Shannon, Winter walking in the Trossachs

Thanks for a challenging couple of days. The 7 hour march up the Ben was slightly at my limits, but I guess the goal is always to test myself. ;) Was also good to recap some of the arrest techniques, and in greater detail than I have done in the past. As I mentioned at the time, I certainly felt confident under your supervision - pushing to the edge of our comfort zones, but always within safe boundaries. Thanks again! - Ifan, Winter Skills and winter Ben Nevis ascent

Just wanted to say thanks for a great day today. I had real doubts that we would have much of a day, but credit to John for making it a full and educational day. Great guiding in tricky conditions. Never quite made the summit, but pretty close. First proper winter walk for me and Katie, but we felt really well supported throughout and she loved the experience. Katie is currently online looking for rucksacks that can hold an ice axe, so I think we will be back. Cheers John for great day - Glen and Katie, Tarmachan

Just a quick note from us to say thanks very much for a great couple of days over the weekend - we thoroughly enjoyed it. We appreciated your guidance over the two days, particularly on Sunday when the conditions were 'interesting' :) Your good humour and mountain expertise were excellent. Heartily recommend John for anyone wishing to get out into the mountains whatever their level of experience. He is a great teacher, with endless patience and understanding. Makes it seem easy and has enabled me, on a personal level, to cope with, and start to conquer, a fear of heights and exposure. Massive thanks to Johnny for a wonderful day out - Matt, Glencoe

We were delighted with your service, you fairly kept the cadets who were leading the way interested, whilst the stragglers caught up and you motivated the weaker ones to get there. Interestingly, later that evening several of them said they would climb more hills. That's a first! Usually they say "never again" until the pain wears off and the memory of the hard work fades. Your knowledge and navigation are absolutely first class, and I feel I learned a lot, as well as enjoying the great stories across 2 fairly epic days! I've just received the evaluations from your guys on the Ring o'Steall. To get all of a group (no matter how small) to fill in the form is unheard of - so they must have loved their time with you......
Steve : What a great day out! John was good company and his calm leadership gave me lots of confidence. As I had no real scrambling experience I wondered how I would cope, but John talked me through any difficulties and even when things seemed tough he didn't let any doubts creep in. I finished the day with a great sense of achievement.
Nigel : Loved both days, but particularly Sunday with a smaller group, slightly quicker pace a John's constant banter..... My first trip with you, on the strong recommendation of my wife....... Was a bit unsure about walking in a group as a committed grumpy old hill runner, but loved it and will definitely be back to do some of the trickier hills with you.
Iain : Superb day, John was an excellent guide; great company for a days walking. Pace was about right.

A mega memorable day.
2 days planned activity rolled into one day of 6 Munros. All managed by a very competent guide in the appropriate name of John Walker.
He displayed high qualities of leadership and decision making which allowed the party to make the most of what were very demanding conditions. He did this in an engaging and entertaining fashion and at all times had the safety and security of the group uppermost in his thoughts. He took me to personal places that I never knew I had in me or dreamed possible for a man of my tender years. Stuart, Alder group

Despite thinking what the hell am I doing here while hanging onto my tent between 2am-4.30am on Sunday morning in some fierce gusts of wind it was a great trip. John was superb, incredibly friendly/sociable, and his flexibility/thinking allowed those that wanted to bag the Munros planned for Sunday (unlikely with the weather forecast) to do so by extending the day. Nick, Alder group
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for a great day out on the Ben Lawers Munros! Really enjoyed it and think it may have sparked an interest in winter walking, hitherto a 'black art' to me. Winter skills course in early 2016 seems likely! John, the snowy descents were exhilarating and even the steep eastern side of An Stuc always felt safe thanks to your route-finding and careful instruction. Johnston, Lawers group

I just wanted to contact you to let you know that we had a great day yesterday on the Forcan Ridge. The weather wasn't ideal considering it is mid June (!) but that didn't affect our enjoyment of the day. Richard and John were super guides - very easy to talk with, gave clear and simple instructions and really boosted our confidence. They were patient and encouraging at every section. We couldn't have asked for more. We ended the day exhausted, but chuffed to bits with what we had done. With our new skills we are really looking forward to being a little more adventurous on the hills and will hopefully join another trip to learn some more. Please pass on our thanks to John and Richard... Susan, Steve and Charlotte (14), Forcan Ridge
